« New Blog Just for ShowTimeMaps | Main | ShowTimeMaps Ready For Use »

I purchased a 19" Samsung 930B monitor tonight just before leaving for church.  I had just enough time to plug it in.  I tried one setting in the display properties to try to get it to come on, but no luck and I was out of time.  When I got back home, I found that it had sorted itself out, and both monitors were on.  All I had to do was swap the primary and secondary monitors so that the new, bigger monitor would be the primary.  I'm really going to enjoy the additional desktop space, but I think the most useful thing for is going to be the fact that I'll be able to use one screen for RDP (remoting into my work machine) and the other for my local machine.  Pretty exciting stuff.

BTW, I signed the contracts for showtimemaps.com last week, so real-time data should be available within days!

What does this require? I've got two monitors here at work I'd like to do the same thing with. Do I need a special card or driver?

I have the Radeon X300 video card. (http://mirror.ati.com/products/radeonx300/radeonx300series/index.html)

Here's the key line in the feature list: "Drive two displays simultaneously with independent resolutions and refresh rates."

There are cards out there that have one VGA output and one DVI-I output, but can only use one of them at a time, so look out for that.

"Dual-Head" is the typical term used for video cards with that feature. You can get the same effect with 2 cards and some luck. dual-head cards are the norm these days. For driving two panels, it's best to get a card with dual digital DVI out. Most use the fact that DVI can carry both analog VGA and digitial DVI and use a "splitter", so one panel is degraded because of an analog signal. That's also good because ClearType will work better.
