To support my spy training inclinations, Jamie got me several spy-type things for my birthday.  Among them is a lock-picking tool set and a book that is supposed to teach me how to pick locks.  An immediate use for them became available when Clinton locked the screen door at Tony's place, for which he did not have the key.  Unfortunately, he did this the day they left for NY for a month and a half.  Fortunately, they don't have any pets that he needed to take care of.  Unfortunately, our friend Susan was needing to stay at their place.  So, you see why the lock-picking was necessary.  Earlier this week, Clinton came over, and I was going to learn how to pick a lock real quick, then we were going to head out to Santa Monica to take care of the situation.  So, I tried to learn by picking the lock on our front door.  Unfortunately, it requires your sense of touch to be “honed” to the sensation of the pins' motion inside the lock.  I quickly realized that I was not going to be able to hone my sense of touch in the next 30 minutes.

We decided to go out there anyway, and see if we could figure something else out.  There had been two windows left open, one on the staircase up to their second floor apartment and one above the garage.  The windows are the kind that have a crank inside to open them, and they open on a vertical axis.  We went to work first on the window on the stairs.  Almost immediately, an elderly woman popped out of nowhere and asked if we lived there.  We, of course, told her that we were breaking in and that she better scram!  Wait, no, we were nice.  She tried to help us come up with a way to get in and mentioned a ladder for the window above the garage.  Then, we noticed a dish network truck parked a block away with a ladder on top of it.  We went over there to see if we could borrow it.  The guy wouldn't lend it to us without coming along with it, so he said he'd come down when he was done installing the dish he was working on.  So, we walked back down to the apartment and hung in the shade (it was well over 90 degrees).  I was getting pretty impatient, partially because the dish guy was taking so long, but also because I hate problems, and I want to find solutions asap.  So, I went back to examine the door.  The hinges were on the outside, so we even tried to take them off.  No luck.  So, I started fiddling with the window above the staircase again.  The window would open about halfway, but there was a screen blocking the crank for us to open it all the way.  After some finagling, I got the screen pushed aside, and we got the window open all the way.  Now we just had to get through the window somehow.  Clinton climbed up and braced himself on the wall and the stair case railing on the other side of the staircase, but it wasn't high enough, so I got below him to offer a foot hold higher up and closer to the wall.  I held my hands out in front of me in the form of a foot hold and braced for his weight.  What I wasn't expecting was for him to step on my shoulder instead.  I was not braced for the weight at that particular juncture.  I started to fall back, and images of us both crashing down the stairs flashed through my head.  Then, he put his other foot on my other shoulder, and I thought we were goners for sure.  As I was falling back, I was able to grab on to the stair case railing and regain my balance.  I pushed up, and he was halfway through the window.  But then he seemed to be stuck, his legs writhing on the outside as I imagined his torso doing on the inside.  Eventually, he wormed his way through and managed to get inside without breaking anything.  Victory at last!

The next day, we found out that Susan had a key to the screen door.

I'm proud to say that I worked out every day this week.  I'm eager to be in better shape this summer, so I can tackle surfing again.  Let's see if I can keep up this pace.  (I'm taking the weekend off.)

Clinton and I went up to the ArcLight to catch a special AFI presentation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest last night.  It was quite pleasant.  The audience was full of film buffs.  The popcorn was free.  And the film we were watching was the producer's (Saul Zaentz) personal print.  Which made me think that I want to have my own personal print of a movie I produced some day.  After the movie was over, everyone headed to the restroom, where Clinton spotted Luke from The O.C.  Pretty exciting.

Well, I'm an idiot.  I got all excited about my Circuit City gift cards from my birthday, and I went online and ordered a network adapter for my PS2, so that with the wireless extender that I also got for my birthday, I could play games online if the need arises.  Today, the adapter came, I ripped it open and sat down by the PS2 to get it installed.  As I turned the PS2 around, I came across an unexpected sight.  There was already a network adapter installed.  Then it came flooding back to me; I had bought the PS2 with the online pack.  So, I sheepishly put all the stuff back in the box, and I'm hoping that they'll hook me up with a refund at the store.  And I'll use that refund to find a really cool online game that I can play with Mark.

Promptly upon our arrival back in California from our weeklong Texas excursion, Jamie went out and bought a scale and is being a nazi about my caloric intake.  Well, maybe it's not that bad, since she just reprimands me instead of genociding me when I have a piece of pie.  Anywho, I'm back on my workout, which I'm now going to try to pull off every weekday.  We had a great time with family and friends, and we're looking forward to the Dudleys officially coming out here in August!

I ventured out today to try to track down some Big Red (soda) in order to make some awesome ice cream.  Jamie had already checked at Ralph's, so I went down to the Target to check it out.  They had nothing.  In the same shopping center, there's a store called BevMo that has Beverages and More!  While they did have a lot of exotic carbonated beverages, they had no Big Red.  They did have IBC Cream Soda, so I thought I'd give that a try.  Now I needed to get some sweetened condensed milk, so off to Ralph's I went.  I grabbed the Eagle Brand (which is what some people's rap is filled with), and got in line.  There at the check out counter about 4 people in front of me was none other than Julian Sark.  For you non-Alias fans, this means nothing to you.  However, for me, I would really have liked to talk to the guy.  I thought about doing the cell phone camera, but I didn't think I could get a good shot.  Usually, when I see celebrities, I think “That's cool.  There's so-and-so.”  This time, though, I think that I would have enjoyed engaging in conversation with him.  One, because Alias is one of my top shows.  Two, because he's just a supporting character, I feel like I could have a normal conversation with him without a bunch of people swarming.  And three, because it was in our neighborhood Ralph's, I felt like he was on my turf.

Off to Texas tomorrow!

I got an ice cream freezer for my birthday, and it got its first use at our place for Taco Tuesday.  I made vanilla ice cream, then added chopped up chocolate chip cookies to the mix during the last 5 minutes.  It was quite tasty.  The freezer is really cool, too, because no ice or rock salt is necessary.  You keep the freezer bowl in the freezer.  It has some sort of liquid in its lining that freezes.  Then, you put your ingredients in the bowl, and turn on the mixer.  Twenty minutes later, you've got cream.  I'm really looking forward to trying out my favorite homemade ice cream flavor: Big Red Peppermint.  I would have made it first, but we haven't found Big Red (the soda, not the gum) out here in California yet.  Boo.

In an unrelated story, we saw David Spade once again at The Grove last night.  This time we saw him at the theatre where we watched The Whole Ten Yards.  I didn't notice, but Jamie said that he was laughing really loudly and then left halfway through.  As for the movie, it wasn't as good as the first one, but it wasn't too bad.

Jeff passed through town today, and Jamie, Clinton, and I joined him for lunch at Chipotle at the Beverly Center.  We then walked around the Beverly Center for awhile.  To my surprise, they have a SonyStyle store!  It's not quite as awesome as the one in NYC, but it will do.

Hey, sorry about the default theme for those of you who don't use an aggregator.  I'll get around to customizing this one someday, but in the meantime, I went to the default so that the Search feature would be available.
